Poet) Christopher Marlowe)

The son of a shoemaker, Marlowe was born two months before Shakespeare. A great wit and a
precocious talent, he won scholarships first into King's School, Canterbury, and later into Corpus College, Cambridge where he received his Batchelor of Arts degree in 1583 and his Master of Arts in 1587. He joined a company of actors called the Admiral's Men who brought his first great play, Tamburlaine the Great (1587), to the stage. Its success inspired him to follow up with Part Two of the play a year l..

. He joined the secret diplomatic service whilst continuing to write such great plays as Dr Faustus and The Jew of Malta. His plays dealt with the corruption of power (as in Tamburlaine), of knowledge (as in Faustus), and of money as in the Jew)

When a plague caused London theatres to close in 1592, he went and lived with a patron, Thomas Walsingham, under whose brother he had worked as a secret agent. He was suspected of atheistic and blasphemous writings and was still being investigated by the London privy council when he died. He had been gambling at backgammon in a Deptford tavern with three other men when one of them stabbed him fatally after a quarrel. He was twenty-nine.

Useful story and translator

A woman came out of her house and saw three old men with long white beards sitting in her front yard. She did not recognize them. She said "I don't think I know you, but you must be hungry. Please come in and have something to eat."

" Is the man of the house in home?" they asked .

No", she replied. "He's out ."

"Then we cannot come in", they replied .

In the evening when her husband came home, she told him what had happened

"Go tell them I am in home and invite them in."

The woman went out and invited the men in .

"We do not go into a House together!" they replied .

"Why is that?" she asked .

One of the old men explained : "His **** is Wealth," he said as pointing to one of his friends, and said, pointing to another one , "He is Success, and I am Love ." Then he added, "Now go in and discuss with your husband which one of us you want in your home ."

The woman went in and told her husband what was said. Her husband was overjoyed . "How nice!" he said . "Since that is the case, let us invite Wealth. Let him come and fill our home with wealth !"

His wife disagreed . "My dear, why don't we invite Success?"

Their daughterinlaw was listening from the other corner of the house. She jumped in with her own suggestion : "Would it not be better to invite Love? Our home will then be filled with love ."

"Let us heed/follow our daughterinlaw's advice," said the husband to his wife !

"Go out and invite Love to be our guest."

The woman went out and asked the three old men , "Which one of you is Love? Please come in and be our guest ."

Love got up and started walking toward the house. The other two also got up and followed him. Surprised, the lady asked Wealth and Success: "I only invited Love ; Why are you coming in?"

The old men replied together : "If you had invited Wealth or Success, the other two of us would've stayed out, but since you invited Love, wherever He goes, we go with him. Wherever there is Love, there is also Wealth and Success

PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING FOR ENGLISH LEARNERS

Principle 1:  All English Language Learners are capable of learning to high
standards if optimal teaching and a supportive environment are provided.

Principle 2: Learning is a process of apprenticeship in which novices become
experts with scaffolding from the teacher or more capable peer.

Principle 3: Language is acquired through social  interactions that are engaging,
meaningful, and purposeful.

Principle 4: Teaching/learning needs to be responsive. Cultural norms and
expectations for effective participation in mainstream social and academic life need
to be explicitly taught to English Learners.

Principle 5: Using language is more than using correct grammar and vocabulary. It
requires cultural knowledge of what is appropriate and  an understanding of
discourse.

Principle 6: Use of rituals or familiar participation structures is necessary when
concepts of language are novel (new).  Familiar concepts and familiar language
(i.e., L1) can serve as the vehicle to learn new rituals or ways  of participating in
academic events.

Principle 7: Language learning requires conscious effort by the student, and by the
informed support (scaffold) of the teacher.

Principle 8: Students should be encouraged to  engage all of their resources,
including their native language, in the learning of English as a second language.

Principle 9: In instruction, the content must be rich and challenging, the language
must move beyond the sentence level to approximate natural discourse, and the
teaching must be carefully scaffolded.

Principle 10: Academic practices, learning and self-assessment strategies need to
be explicitly taught to English Language learners.

Principle 11: Instruction, curriculum, and assessments are aligned to reflect high
standards and best practices
Principle 12: All parents can become successful partners in the education of
English learners by continuing to support the development of the first language
